Here’s a possibility for students interested in rural health care might want to check out. It’s a project in Alabama, started by a Pomona alum. The message below is one I sent to our pre-health student listserv a couple of days ago.

John Dorsey Pomona ’95 MD/MBA is a psychiatrist who started an unusual residential project in Alabama:

Horseshoe Farm http://www.projecthsf.org/index.php

They now have a fellowship program, specifically for people aiming to enter health care and related human service professions who want to take a one or two-year working/learning opportunity before entering graduate or professional school.

Current Fellows are graduates of Willilams, Amherst, and Univ. of Alabama-Birmingham.

It’s not for everyone, so read carefully on the site before proceeding. It’s a care community for “vulnerable” individuals, with other programs involving people in the local community. Living is very simple and very rural- no TV, no nearby shopping mall, etc.

Please email us (infohsf@yahoo.com) to inquire whether we have filled all available Fellowship spots before taking the time to complete an application.
